In her manor’s foyer, she greeted the Governor of Zelris, Helios, and her Omen friend, Creetus. Her diligent servant Andrei had already prepared fresh tea for the pair, much to Giselle’s delight.

“Lady Murada,” Governor Helios said. “The situation has developed.”

Helios was a stern man, his silver hair resting on his shoulders. There was no signifier of his status other than the badge on his chest and the orderliness of his hair. His attire–a black coat and damage-resistant pants was about as distracting as the uniform of the investigators on his staff–or in other words, he looked totally ordinary. His voice was deeper than most, and his face wore the irritation that came from days of chasing fools.

He looked straight at Giselle, unflinchingly so, as he waited for an answer.

“It has? Beyond the information in this morning’s letter?” Giselle replied, raising a brow. “You found something that can help us with the petrification curse? Already?”

“He is not speaking about that, Giselle,” Creetus said. “The Governor’s forces intercepted a communication and confirmed it with one of the captured cultists… It’s unexpected, to put it mildly.”

“Well, come on then,” Giselle said, urging the two to continue. “Is it the Fair? Do we know what designs they have on Maira?”

Creetus shook his head, and Giselle’s eyes went back to Helios.

“It’s not that,” he replied, a little hesitant to disappoint the Omen. “It’s regarding the Cult of the Ancients–”

“The Remnants of the Cult, yes?” Giselle asked.

“Not Remnants,” Helios replied. “A troop of them is due to arrive in Zelris tonight.”

“Sounds like remnants. So what? Are they going to come here to collect whatever’s left of their plantations–”

“They’re accompanying a Cult Bishop.”

The statement gave Giselle pause.

Creetus nodded. “Remember what you said about faraway shepherds, Giselle? Shepard won’t be far.”

“A Bishop of the cult? Hmm.” Giselle’s eyes seemed to search the air for answers before she finally spoke. “The bishops of today may not be of the same caliber as the bishops of decades past.”

“Lady Murada, with all due respect, we should not purposefully try to underestimate the cult,” Helios said. “Just a week ago, we thought they were dead. And now look–a bishop is on their lips.”

Giselle signaled to Andrei that she wished for tea, and took a seat. “The bishops of that cult were ones who could rival the regular combatants of the Elemental Tribes. They were people who could contend with our trained and ranked officers. Such a person is out there, amassing their following? Without us keeping an eye on them? How?”

“The lands of the Demon Realm are vast, Lady Murada. We cannot expect our security forces to catch every single little thing, especially when we are already fighting wars on three different fronts. The Cult first came to power at the height of our war against the Human Realm. We are in a slightly peaceful era, yes, but the hostile Realms remain, including the Ancient Forest. We’ve grown comfortable with our victory over the cult, and our scrutiny has fallen. Our soldiers and Omens are preoccupied elsewhere.
